The Little
Miami Trail Extension
Project Description
The proposed project will upgrade a
section of the Little Miami Scenic Trail, a primarily shared use path
that offers non-motorized recreational and transportation opportunities
from Newtown, Ohio (north and east of Cincinnati) to the City of
Springfield. The existing Little Miami Scenic Trail in Clark
County is eight miles in length and is a 10-foot-wide shared-use trial
from the Greene County line to Springfield-Xenia Road, Yellow Springs
Street and John Street. Between John Street and Johnny Lytle
Avenue, the trail is a shared-use trail. The trail becomes a
bicycle lane from Johnny Lytle to Fair Street along Plum Street and is
dedicated trail again from Fair Street to Jefferson Street, where it
terminates and the Simon Kenton Trail begins. The dedicated trail
portion is approximately 6.5 miles and the bicycle lane portion is
approximately 1.5 miles.
The City of Springfield, Clark
County-Springfield Transportation Coordinating Committee (TCC) and other
local project sponsors are entertaining alternatives to the current
alignment of the Little Miami Trail in the southern portion of
Springfield. This proposed project begins south of Interstate 70
and continues northward to the existing path on John Street. The
project then picks up at Johnny Lytle and continues to the existing path
on Fair Street. The City is under contract with LJB Inc. to
examine several different alternatives for the trail.
The alternatives include a no-build
scenario, an on-street scenario, as well as several different dedicated
trail alternatives. It is the goal of the City of Springfield, the
TCC, as well as other project sponsors to determine the best, most
beneficial alternative for not only the City, but also those people who
are users of the Little Miami Trail. The City of Springfield will
administer the design and construction of the project (non-traditional
LPA project).

Project Status and Next Steps
Currently, the project is in the planning stage to determine the
preferred alternative approach for the project, as discussed above.
This stage includes conceptual alternative development and secondary
source environmental investigations. Public comments will be
analyzed and considered along with a variety of other factors to select
a preferred alternative. Some of these other factors can include
environmental impacts, constructability, property acquisition needs, and
construction costs. Once the preferred alternative is selected,
detail engineering will commence and the environmental clearance will be
completed.

the sheet.
Schedule and Costs
Currently, engineering, environmental
clearance, and property acquisition are expected to be completed by the
spring of 2014, with construction commencing as early as the summer of
2014. Depending on the combination of preferred alternatives
selected for the north and south sections of the project, the
preliminary construction costs are estimated to range between 1.2
million (least expensive combination of alternatives) to 3.1 million
(the most expensive combination of alternatives).
